ASEAN Young Changemakers Reconvene to Discuss EU-ASEAN Sustainable Urban Development

Jakarta, 24 August 2023 – Today, Lukas Gajdos, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. of the Delegation of the European Union to ASEAN engaged over 300 ASEAN youth in an online discussion exploring the challenges around sustainable urban development in ASEAN cities.

The event featured three ASEAN Urban Heroes who also participated in the EU-ASEAN Young Exchange for Sustainable Urban Development and ASEAN Mayors Forum. During the talkshow, the three Urban Heroes, Alouny Senduangdeth from 2nd Hand World, Lao PDR, Mac Florendo from Food Rescue, The Philippines and Vu Hong Thanh from Danang Zero Waste Community, Viet Nam, shared their insights and experiences engaging with Governors, Mayors, and other city administrators during the ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF) from 1 to 2 August 2023.

‘It really was an opportunity. It was an opportunity to listen, it was also an opportunity to say something to share. I was very glad that most of the mayors that attended the AMF from the Philippines were actually young people or people that engage in the political level at a very young age’,  Mac Florendo from Food Rescue, Philippines, said.

For over one and a half hour, Mr. Gajdos and the three youth speakers engaged participants in discussions around various challenges faced by ASEAN cities, including climate change, environment, food, and responsibilities towards sustainable urban development.

First introduced in 2021, the EU-ASEAN Youth Talk Show has become one of the EU’s flagship programme for youth engagement in the region.
